Product Information

The Oaknook Solid Wood Pen Block is a small cube of timber with a single deep hole drilled through it. It holds the two or three pens you actually reach for rather than the twenty you never use, which is a different and more honest proposition than a pot. A full pen pot encourages accumulation, and most of what accumulates is dried out, borrowed or broken, so the pot becomes storage for things you will not use.

At 3.5cm square it takes up almost no desk at all, and the density of solid wood means it stays put when you pull a pen out one handed instead of tipping or travelling across the surface. The hole runs 3cm deep, enough to hold a full length pen upright and steady. Limiting the capacity is a deliberate constraint rather than a shortcoming, and it makes the pen you want the one you pick up first every time.

Choose black walnut for a darker, more figured grain or beech for a paler and more even one. Each block is hand finished and left unpainted, so the timber is what you see and it will darken slowly with handling rather than chipping the way a coated finish does. The end grain is left visible on the top face, so the drilled hole reads as part of the block rather than as a fitting added to it.

The pens you reach for, not the pile

It holds the two or three pens you actually use rather than the twenty you never touch, which is a more honest proposition than a pot. Limiting the capacity is the point, and it makes your favourite pen the one you pick up first every time.

Tiny footprint, steady in use

At 3.5cm square it takes up almost no desk at all, and the density of solid wood keeps it planted when you pull a pen out one handed. The hole runs 3cm deep, enough to hold a full length pen upright and steady.

Just timber, hand finished

Choose black walnut for a darker, more figured grain or beech for a paler, more even one. Each block is hand finished and left unpainted, so the wood is what you see, and it darkens slowly with handling rather than chipping the way a coated finish does.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many pens does it hold?

It holds two or three pens, which is a deliberate limit rather than a shortcoming. Keeping only the pens you actually reach for means the one you want is always the one you pick up first.

How big is it?

It is 3.5cm square with a hole drilled 3cm deep, so it takes up almost no desk while still holding a full length pen upright and steady.

Which wood should I choose?

Black walnut gives a darker, more figured grain, while beech is paler and more even. Both are hand finished and left unpainted, so the timber shows and darkens gently with use.

Will it tip when I take a pen out?

No. The density of solid wood gives it enough weight to stay put when you pull a pen out one handed, rather than tipping or travelling across the desk.

Is it painted or coated?

Neither. It is hand finished and left unpainted, so the wood grain is what you see. It wears in with handling rather than chipping the way a painted finish does.
